How do I determine my finger size?

Choosing a ring is an important decision. What design? What stones? What metal?

The first crucial step that arises is finding your finger size.

This is an essential topic because a ring that is too tight can become uncomfortable on a daily basis, and a ring that is too loose risks falling off and being lost.

Here is a complete guide with several techniques in order to determine your finger size.

Go see a jeweller

This is obviously the most reliable technique to quickly and accurately determine your finger size.

At a jeweler's, you have two ways to find out your size: either they use a ring mandrel if you already own a ring that fits you, or a ring sizer if you don't have one.

You'll have the opportunity to try on several sizes to see if you feel more comfortable with a tighter or slightly looser ring. You can also test if the ring fits comfortably on your finger.

Measure with a ring you already own

If you are unable to go to a jeweller but have a ring that fits you perfectly, you can measure the inner diameter of the ring and compare the distance with the table below.

Caution: Be sure to measure the inner diameter of the ring and not the outer diameter including the thickness.

Measuring your finger at home

This technique is a temporary solution. It's not ideal, but if you really have no other option, here's how to do it:

  1. Cut out a small strip of paper approximately 4mm wide.
  2. Wrap it tightly around your finger so that there are no gaps, but without compressing the finger.
  3. Mark with a pen where the two pieces of paper meet
  4. Measure the distance between the beginning of the paper and the line; you have the circumference of your finger.

The circumference in millimeters corresponds to your ring size.

Example: if the distance is 5.2cm (52mm), your finger circumference is 52

Mistakes to avoid

  • Measure your finger when it's cold (fingers are thinner).
  • Measure your finger after physical exertion (fingers are thicker due to congestion)
  • Forgetting that the right and left hands can be different sizes

If you're hesitating between two sizes, it's best to choose the larger one to allow for swollen fingers in the summer.
